After Effects is powerful out of the box, but scripting is where you unlock the real speed gains. After years of freelance motion design work, here are the scripts I actually use on client projects.
Why Scripts Change Everything
The biggest time drain in After Effects is not creativity — it is repetitive technical setup. Building a glass morphism effect by hand takes 30-40 minutes. Organising 200 layers into groups takes an hour. Animating text word by word takes even longer.
Scripts automate the technical parts so you can spend your time on the creative decisions that actually matter to clients.
Scripts Worth Using in 2025
For glass effects: Liquid Glass Script
If you are building any kind of glass morphism, frosted UI, or translucent panel effect, the Liquid Glass Script is the fastest way to do it. One click builds a complete 4-layer glass system on any layer — displacement, blur, highlight, rim light, all auto-configured and linked through expressions.
For SaaS UI animations: SaaS Panel Kit
The SaaS Panel Kit generates a full 7-layer glass panel system on any rectangle shape layer. It is specifically built for the kind of premium glass UI you see in SaaS product demos and app animations. Displacement, glow, rim light, outline — all auto-sized and aligned to your base shape.
For layer organisation: TIDY LAYERS
Available on the Dream Chaser Payhip store, TIDY LAYERS brings Photoshop-style layer grouping to After Effects. Select layers, create a group, fold them out of the way. Essential on any project with more than 50 layers.
For text animation: Word & Line Animator
A dockable ScriptUI panel that animates text word-by-word or line-by-line in seconds. Choose your easing, set timing, click apply. Far faster than building text animators from scratch.
How to Install After Effects Scripts
- Download the %%CODE0%% or %%CODE1%% file
- In After Effects, go to File → Scripts → Run Script File (for one-time use)
- Or copy the file to:
Applications/Adobe After Effects [version]/Scripts/ScriptUI Panels/for permanent docking - Restart After Effects and find the script under Window menu
Scripts installed in the ScriptUI Panels folder appear in the Window menu and can be docked like any other panel.
Language Compatibility
One thing worth checking before buying any AE script: does it use language-independent property references? Some scripts break in non-English versions of After Effects because they search for effect names by their localised UI label.
All Dream Chaser scripts use matchName references internally — they work correctly in any After Effects language version.
The ROI of Buying Scripts
At $16-19 per script, the maths is simple. If a script saves you 30 minutes per project and you do 10 projects per year, that is 5 hours saved for a one-time purchase. At any reasonable freelance rate, these tools pay for themselves on the first project.
